Home Project Brief Builder
This tool helps you create a simple written brief for an architect so that early design work is focused on what matters to you.
Quick checklist
- Why do you want to change or extend the space
- How many people will use each area and at what times
- Your approximate budget and must not exceed limit
- Any style preferences such as modern, traditional or minimal
What to include in your project brief
A good brief helps everyone pull in the same direction. It does not need to be perfect, but it should capture your priorities in plain language.
1. Reasons for the project
Explain what is not working in the current layout. For example, lack of light, no space for family meals or difficulty working from home.
2. How you use the space
Describe who uses each room, and at what times of day. Note any special requirements such as quiet work areas, play space or accessible bathrooms.
3. Budget and timing
Add a realistic budget range and any timing constraints, such as school holidays or work commitments. Honest figures help the architect guide options.
4. Style and feel
Mention what you like and dislike. You can refer to existing rooms, magazines or online images. This gives the architect a good sense of your taste.
How to use this tool
- Work through each section of the checklist and add your notes.
- Share the finished brief with your architect before or after the first visit.
- Update it as your ideas develop.
